Supporting Downside Fisher Youth Club

23rd February 2023

We are very proud of our relationship with Downside Fisher Youth Club (DFYC) and the work we undertake to support them in maintaining a safe and healthy building.

About Downside Fisher Youth Group

Based in Bermondsey, South-East London, and founded over 100 years ago, the DFYC is a charitable organisation that provides support and structured activities for socially excluded children and young people.

Through sport, education, art and recreational activities, the DFYC has helped many of the areas most vulnerable children and young people acquire new skills, build confidence and develop their interests, encouraging them to take a responsible role in the community and successfully navigate their way through London’s fast-paced environment.

Opportunities for all

The club provides a weekly activity programme, a Boxing Club and runs a range of residential trips, including the annual Summer Camp – and for the most adventurous, a 100-mile canoe trip down the River Severn!

A variety of facilities have been developed over the years, including a sports hall, 5-a-side football pitch, cricket nets, dance studio, rehearsal spaces, café and meeting rooms, which are also available to hire. The club runs a packed schedule of weekly swimming classes from their on-site swimming pool.

These ‘paid for’ activities fund the charity’s vital work providing free clubs and opportunities for over 2,000 children and young people every year.

Staying safe and compliant

To ensure that all recreational areas remain safe for the people who use them and disruption is kept to a minimum, a regular maintenance plan of water treatment and legionella risk assessment must be carried out.

Swimming pools, in particular, are a high-risk environment for legionella growth. As ‘duty holders’ the management team must assess and control the risk of legionella to comply with legal duties under health and safety legislation.

Legionella Risk Assessment and Water Treatment

We help DFYC keep their buildings and water systems safe and compliant by carrying out the necessary risk assessments and any subsequent legionella treatment.

Recent work has included sampling, replacement of some equipment, dosing and a risk assessment for the swimming pool, enabling the children and young people who benefit from youth centre to develop their swimming skills in a risk-free environment.

We deliver water hygiene services for a wide range of sectors – find out more here.
