Prevent legionella in cooling towers

Cooling systems can fall foul of legionella bacteria, which, if not managed and treated correctly could pose serious risk to public health and a company’s reputation. Guardian Water Treatment provides a comprehensive cooling tower service package from commissioning right through the entire life cycle of the plant.

Legionella control guidance is covered by HSG247 part 1 and in the Approved Code of Practice L8 2013 – The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems (ACoP L8). Failure to comply puts people’s health at risk and if an issue did occur, this failure could be used in criminal proceedings as evidence of a company’s negligence.

As cooling towers are open-circuit systems they are particularly susceptible to legionella and must be designed and maintained in-line ACoP L8 guidance, on-going legionella risk assessments management and treatment are essential to safe operations.

Cooling system risk assessment – next steps

Once a cooling system legionella risk assessment has been completed, Guardian will produce a ‘written scheme of precautions’ and detail all findings in the log book – another requirement of ACoP L8.

Guardian provides a range of water treatment services, including  continuous, 24/7 corrosion monitoring with Hevasure. Suitable for closed system cooling towers, by flagging up any issues before corrosion occurs; such as fluctuations in oxygen levels and the presence of bio-film; water hygiene is improved and potentially damaging conditions can be identified early-on.
