Tank Refurbishment / Replacement

One of the most common outputs from a risk assessment is the need to improve the storage condition and/or reduce the amount of stored water in a building. The three main options for refurbishing a tank in poor condition are:

- To clean and coat it
- To replace it
- To clean and 'butyl' line it

Cleaning & Coating
Guardian offer a range of Water Research Council (WRc) and Water Research Advisory Service (WRAS) approved coating materials; high-build epoxy resin, and; two pack polyurethane resin systems.

Both types of system offer the following benefits:
- Solvent free technology
- Very fast cure times, even at low temperatures
- All regulations and approvals for drinking water
- Application suitable for factory, on site and in-situ
- Reduced downtime of storage tanks and process vessels
- Long life performance with minimal maintenance

Replacement
It is sometimes not practical e.g. where tank rooms or lofts have been built around the tank. But it may be a client requirement. When replacing tanks as when lining or coating them, the opportunity should be taken to down-size the amount of stored water on site, if needed. Where tank replacement is the favoured option the new tank will conform to the latest operative regulations. Currently, The Water Regulations 1999, the quantity of water stored is calculated by reference to BS6700 (1997), the new tank will also be positioned correctly within the available space to comply with both sets of guidance.

Cleaning and buytl lining
This can be cheaper than replacement of all but the smallest tanks. In terms of economy of time, lining is quicker than coating, it can also incorporate internal insulation, and there are no problems lining the internal wall of a two compartment tank which can present adhesion and drying problems for coating systems.

One distinct advantage over coatings is that, the working life of badly corroded tanks, even those with small leaks, can be extended by placing the liner inside the tank.

Guardian use only those linings with WRc approval for use in potable water applications. These start at 1mm butyl rubber, they are tough, non-toxic and long-lasting. (Beware of inferior materials!).

The three technologies on offer from Guardian present the client with a variety of solutions to the refurbishment of water storage tanks, there is not a 'one size fits all' answer for tank refurbishment.

Every site is different, Guardian are not dogmatic in the approach to refurbishment, but rather take the view that the best solution is one that best suits the site.

The final element of Guardian tank coating tank replacement, or tank lining service is a clean and disinfection to BS6700 (1997). Guardian also have the capability to refurbish other components of a domestic water system ie. calorifiers.
