The latest edition of guidelines for pre-commission cleaning of pipework systems (BG 29/2011), has increased the responsibility for designers and contractors to seek professional advice at an early stage in the development of systems to make sure that they can be effectively flushed and cleaned. According to leading water treatment specialists, Guardian Water Treatment, following the latest guidelines for the pre-commissioning cleaning process is the first crucial step to maintaining the water quality for the lifetime of the building.

The guidelines, designed to help avoid water system breakdowns and contamination also includes low energy 2-port controlled systems.

Originating in 1991, the standardised procedures have, over time, provided accepted guidance on the chemical cleaning of pipework systems, revisions needed to reflect changing flow rates and pipework sizes and most significantly the problem of bacteria induced contamination, specifically Psuedomonas and biofilms. Psuedomonas have long been known for causing problems in chilled and heating systems and they are usually an integral part of biofilms. Biofilms can disrupt many water treatment processes as they produce an obstructive slime and a barrier preventing corrosion treatment chemicals reaching the metal surface to clean or protect it.

Subsequent revisions included fit-out procedures for multi-occupancy systems and this latest release provides vital detailed requirements for final sampling of systems on completion and onwards to practical completion.

Steven Booth at Guardian Water Treatment explained: ‘Many of the seemingly onerous requirements in the new regulations can be met more easily if the right expertise is brought to bear as early as possible, preferably at the design stage. By working alongside design and engineering consultants it’s possible for us to minimise future cost and disruption and risk to reputation where system breakdowns disable production and service for an organisation.’

The new requirements include:-

Increased design responsibility

Increased monitoring of flushing water supplies

Increased monitoring of filled systems prior to water treatment.

More detailed flushing procedure – particularly with regard to batching of floors.

Detailed procedures for sampling based upon BS 8552.

Details of the number and locations for final samples to be taken based upon system size and complexity.

Alterations to limits that are acceptable in newly cleaned systems include: Soluble Iron – reduced from 5mg/lt to 3mg/ltTotal Iron – reduced from 15mg/lt to 6mg/ltTotal Copper – an additional parameter, maximum 1mg/ltSettlable Solids – increased in terminal units from 30mg/lt as suspended solids to 45 mg/lt

A new section of monitoring systems from completion of water treatment to PC including two weekly sampling. The number and location of samples, the parameters including NRB testing, and the use of graphical interpretation of results.

Hello,

At Guardian we are passionate about supporting the communities within which we operate. To lead from the front I am pleased to announce that I am taking part in the London to Paris bike ride commencing on the 9th May 2012.

Unfortunately, on the spur of the moment I have decided to do this and, shall we say, I am not at the required fitness levels so I have a lot of work to do and need all the support and encouragement I can get!

The event is spread over 4 days and covers approximately 300 miles which equates to 75 miles a day.

I am self funding this event so every penny will be going to the charity.

Donating through this page is simple, quick and secure. It is the most efficient way to give – so every donation goes further – and if you are a UK taxpayer and give Gift Aid consent you will boost your donation.

Thank you for your support.

Mark.

Guardian air and water treatment has announced the completion of phase one of its investment in a unique upgraded data information portal for its clients. The online database, GuardianCare, provides seamless site-to-engineer-to-client up to the minute data, helping companies to comply with requirements for air and water hygiene. The technology is set to become the benchmark in the industry as the planned innovation is to continue to keep it at the leading edge.

With customer care at the heart of everything it does, GuardianCare offers clients a series of advantages such as:

Allows clients to view when contract visits are scheduled and completed

Clients can view all reports online

Any critical issues identified are communicated immediately

No delays in clients receiving paperwork

Completion and compliance certificates can be printed directly without delay

No need for paper log books

Access to a wide range of method statements and COSHH data sheets with easy print options via PDF files

Ease of reporting to both building managers and environmental health officers

Mark Hobson from Guardian explained: ‘This major investment is all about giving our clients a competitive advantage and total peace of mind. When it comes to best practice and compliance in air and water treatment and hygiene nothing can be left to chance and our mission is to provide the most robust systems and ease of access to critical data so that management can always make informed decisions.’

Basildon based Guardian Air and Water Treatment knew exactly what to do when leading charity Kids Company needed a van for its work with vulnerable children – donate one!

At a ceremony in London, Guardian’s CEO Mark Hobson presented one of the company’s vans that had reached the end of its commercial life but has years of service left in it – just what the charity needed to ferry flatpack furniture to the homes of children who are often acting as the ‘adult’ in their family by caring for their parents and siblings.. Kids Company works with corporate volunteers to give the kids the kind of personal space they have only ever dreamt of, such as a new, clean and tidy bedroom.

The van was donated as part of Guardian’s ‘Young Guardians’ initiative which aims to help children who are young carers to have some time just being children, away from the pressures of having to shop, cook, clean and look after family members despite being children themselves. Mark Hobson from Guardian said: ‘I am thrilled that we are able to make a big difference with a small gesture. Our staff are passionate about our Young Guardian’s programme and are currently planning a charity quiz night to support more children. Kids Company do such vital work and to think that even one child might be able to cope better or even just smile a bit more because they have their own clean space to escape to and rest and play in, makes us all very happy indeed.’

Neera Dhingra from Kids Company said: ‘We are so very grateful for this wonderful donation which will make a real difference to our ability to get the job done. The generosity of amazing people like this enables us to support over 14,000 children and young people who are often struggling through their childhoods with little or no help. Thank you with all our heart.”
